Wayne and Scott Neeson, founder of CCF met attending Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth SA. Scott was in the same Year 11 class as Wayne’s older brother Kym and a close friend of Paul Cassidy, a mutual friend of Waynes. (Those of you who have our children’s book My Dad Has Purple Hands! might recognize Paul’s name as the illustrator.)

When high school finished, they all took different paths (as is usually the case). Wayne started his working life in the wine industry and Scott pursued a career in film promotion.  Both were successful in their own right and, while Wayne ended up in the Barossa Valley with purple hands and a shed full of barrels of Shiraz, Scott’s career took him further afield to the shine and celebrity of the Hollywood sign. Over the years, Paul, Wayne and Scott would try to catch up when Scott made visits back to Australia for Christmas, or while passing through the country with a movie star by his side.

Wayne started making frequent visits to the US promoting Dutschke Wines to the friendly Americans. Scott’s kind offer of a bed for the night and a meal out were often added to Wayne’s itinerary when in the Southern California neighbourhood.  Scott had a busy life as President of 2oth Century Fox International marketing and promoting block buster films such as Titanic, Star Wars, X-Men and Braveheart.  This of course included rubbing elbows with the stars of these films and travelling the world with them. It was a life that was the envy of many, yet for the one that was living it, there was always something missing.

Scott took some time out and travelled through Cambodia on holiday before embarking on a new job with Sony Pictures.  Little did he know that he would land on top of a rubbish heap in Phnom Penh witnessing adults and children scavenging for anything that they could sell to help feed their families.  This of course was so sadly contrasting to the entitlement of the Hollywood scene where Scott lived. It was an experience that changed Scott’s life.

“The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do”. Steve Jobs

In 2004 Scott quit his job at Sony Pictures, sold all his belongings and moved to Cambodia to create the Cambodian Children’s Fund (CCF). Now celebrating their 20-year anniversary, CCF has changed the world for countless families and children living in extreme poverty.  Wayne and his friend Patrick Schwerdt witnessed this while visiting Scott, the CCF team and the families in Phnom Penh in June this year. To see what has been achieved is just incredible. Scott and the CCF team, with the support of many generous sponsors, have built schools, communal kitchens, houses for families, provided teaching staff, medical support, meals, transport, fresh filtered water for the local community, and most of all the education and opportunity for children and families who have come from such impoverished backgrounds. There are also several children, who, after graduating from CCF High School have furthered their studies at the University of Melbourne, having received scholarships to attend.

It is for this reason why we have decided to raise funds for CCF through the sale of our final pack of wine. It is our way of giving back.  Of wanting to make an impact.  Of changing a young child’s world.
