2018 Circa Centum Shiraz “Almost One Hundred”
Wally and Daphne Krieg were the last of the Krieg Family to care for the family farm on the corner of Krieg and Gods Hill Road in Lyndoch.
The property, a mixture of sheep, grain and grapes provided for the Krieg family for over 150 years. Vineyard covered approximately 20 acres and much of it was planted by Wally and Daphne’s father during the 1920’s and 1930’s. In the north western corner of this vineyard, on a patch of rich red brown dirt over a clay base grow 10 rows of Shiraz planted in the 1920’s.
In previous years we have only managed to source 5 of these 10 rows of Shiraz, blending this parcel into our GHR Neighbours Shiraz. In 2018 we were fortunate enough to take every grape off all 10 rows, setting aside a few of the better barrels to make this reserve single vineyard release.
Hand harvested on the 5th of March 2018, we shovelled one of the 8 bins directly into the bottom of a fermenter, before crushing and destemming 6 of the remaining bins on top. This miniature version of a carbonic maceration sets up layers of grape and stalk and provides layers of aromatics and flavour in the final wine. Pumped over twice daily, the grapes fermented on skins for 8 days before being basket pressed and allowed to finish primary and malolactic fermentation in barrel.
The final blend, aged in 80% French Oak and 20% American Oak, both new and seasoned, for 20 months, is a rich and delicious wine.
We trust you’ll enjoy it!
